Hartmut Pea

Hartmut Erbse (born November 23, 1915 in Rudolstadt ; † July 7, 2004 in Trossingen ) was a German classical philologist who worked as a professor at the Universities of Hamburg (1954–1965), Tübingen (1965–1968) and Bonn (1968–1984 ) worked.

Life

The son of a doctor from Thuringia studied classical philology in Hamburg, where he received his doctorate in 1941 on fragments of Greek theosophies . In 1948 he completed his habilitation as a Graecist with a study of the attic lexicons. In the same year he received his first lectureship in Hamburg. There he was appointed adjunct professor in 1954 and finally appointed full professor six years later. In 1965 he followed a call to Tübingen to the Chair of Greek Philology and in 1968 another call to the University of Bonn, where he researched and taught until shortly before his death ( retired 1984). In 2003 he moved to Trossingen to live with his son.

His research was devoted to the textual criticism and writing of Greek fragments and scholias , the understanding of Homer , Herodotus and Thucydides . Erbse acted as co-editor of the renowned magazines Glotta and Hermes and in 1965 was one of the editors of the Lexikon der Alten Welt (LAW) alongside Carl Andresen , Olof Gigon , Karl Schefold , Karl Friedrich Stroheker and Ernst Zinn . Together with Kurt Latte he edited the Lexica Graeca Minora .

Hartmut Erbse was a corresponding member of the British Academy and the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen .
