Georg Luck

Georg Luck (born February 17, 1926 in Bern , † February 17, 2013 in Baltimore ) was a Swiss- US-American classical philologist .

Luck studied classical philology at the universities of Bern and Zurich . The Smith Mund Fellowship enabled him to stay in the United States in 1951/1952 . At Harvard University put Luck 1952 Master -Examen from. He then worked as a lecturer at Yale University (1952/1953), then returned briefly to Bern for the purpose of his doctorate (with Walter Wili ) and then worked at Brown University , and from 1955 at Harvard University. After a year of research as a Guggenheim Fellow (1958/1959), Luck returned to Europe and completed his habilitation in 1960 at the University of Mainz . After two years as a private lecturer, he was appointed full professor at the University of Bonn in 1962 . He worked here for ten years until he returned to the USA in 1972 and was appointed Full Professor of Classics at Johns Hopkins University . In 1990 he retired.

Luck's main research interests included Roman poetry ( Tibullus , Properz , Ovid , Lucan ), which he also translated into German, cynicism and ancient magic . His writings appeared in English and German.
