Walter Wili

Walter Wili (born April 27, 1900 in Lucerne ; † October 15, 1975 in Bern ) was a Swiss classical philologist .

Walter Wili studied classical philology and law at the universities of London , Freiburg im Breisgau , Berlin and Zurich . After doing his doctorate and habilitation in Zurich (1929), he held courses as a private lecturer. In 1932 he was appointed to represent a chair for classical philology at the University of Bern , which he had held as an associate professor since 1933. Wili worked in Bern until his retirement (1966) and beyond. Since 1951 he was a corresponding member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry .

Wili was mainly concerned with Augustan poetry and the humanitas idea of ​​antiquity. His best-known work is the monograph Horace and Augustan Culture (Basel 1948, reprint 1966). In 1949 he founded the Noctes Romanae series , which was published by Haupt Verlag until 1978 .

Wili bequeathed his extensive private library to his student Georg Luck , who donated it to the Department of Classical Studies at the University of Pennsylvania .
