Max Imhof
Max Imhof (born March 11, 1928 in Kerzers , Canton of Friborg ; † February 5, 2017 in Bern ) was a Swiss classical philologist .
Life
Max Imhof, the son of the veterinarian Jakob Imhof and Marie Rosa b. Neukomm, attended elementary school in Kerzers and from the spring of 1940 the municipal Progymnasium or (from 1943) grammar school in Bern, where he passed the Matura type A in autumn 1947 . He then studied German, history, Greek and archeology at the University of Bern from the winter semester 1947/48 . He spent the summer semester of 1951 at the University of Tübingen . He then switched to classical philology with a major in Greek, but kept Latin, archeology and German until graduation. In May 1953 Imhof passed the diploma examination for the higher teaching post in Berne in the subjects of Greek and Latin. He taught as a substitute teacher at various grammar schools and secondary schools and was also preparing his doctorate for Dr. phil. which he reached in the summer of 1953.
A scholarship from the Swiss Association of Classical Philology enabled Imhof to work at the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae in Munich from November 1, 1955 to March 31, 1957 . There he wrote key words for Volume VII 2. He then taught Greek and Latin as a high school professor in Bern and also kept in touch with the academic sphere. After a stay on a scholarship at the Istituto Svizzero di Roma (1961/62) , he completed his habilitation in 1965 at the University of Bern in the field of Classical Philology. In 1970 the university appointed him associate professor in a part-time position; at the same time Imhof was accepted into the cantonal Matura Commission and in 1974 elected its chairman. In 1992 Imhof retired.
