Helena Marques

Helena Pereira Gonçalves Marques (born May 17, 1935 in Carcavelos , Lisbon District , Portugal ) is a Portuguese writer and journalist.

Life

She grew up on the Portuguese island of Madeira , where she attended school and the Academia de Música e Bela Artes, where she studied English literature and language.

At first she worked as a private teacher, since 1957 as a journalist, a. a. at the Diário de Notícias da Madeira newspaper . In 1971 she moved to Lisbon, where she worked for the daily newspaper Diário de Notícias and the women's magazine Marie Claire . Work for small newspapers followed.

She made her debut as a writer in 1992 after her retirement with the novel "Raquels Töchter", a family saga about Madeira, which was awarded various prizes.

In addition to German, her work has also been translated into Italian, Castilian , Greek, Romanian and Bulgarian.

Her books and topics are often shaped by literary feminism . Two works have been translated into German.

In 1994 she rejected the Madeira Island Medal of Honor because she did not agree with the style of government of the island's President Alberto João Jardim .

In 2001 she received the Grand Cross of Infante Dom Henrique from the President of Portugal, Jorge Sampaio .
