history

Winery in Carcavelos

Carcavelos was run as a small town ( Vila ) until the neighboring village of Oeiras was raised in 1760 . Then the place was part of the district of Oeiras until 1898, since 1898 the municipality has belonged to Cascais.

It lost the title of Vila , although the village as the seat of the municipality was already densely populated. Today there are only two vilas in the Cascais district: Cascais and Parede .

In 1870, the first two submarine cables on the telegraph line to Porthcurno created an important information link for the British Empire .

The name of the old and well-known quality liqueur wine , the Vinho de Carcavelos (a Vinho generoso ), is derived from the municipality whose região demarcada (dt .: demarcation region ) is the smallest in Portugal and next to the first demarcated area in the world, the Alto Douro , one of the oldest in the world.

Due to its beach, which is one of the largest in the area, the place is one of the most frequented places by the Linha de Cascais . This is said to have increased the risk of petty crime in recent years. An example of this is above all the "arrastão" (German: trawl , a robbery of around 500 members of youth gangs) on the beach of the community that occurred in 2005, reminiscent of similar attacks on the Copacabana (Brazil). The attack, which was also widespread in the international press, later turned out to be a false report. Young people of African, Brazilian and Eastern European origins are said to have caused unrest on the beach, but there were no further fights when the police officers who were summoned and no thefts or robberies were reported to the officers.
