Albrecht W. Hofmann (born March 11, 1939 in Zeitz ) is a German geochemist .

Life

Hofmann graduated from high school in Ravensburg . He then studied for a year at Duke University in Durham (North Carolina) , USA, then further geology at the University of Freiburg . He then studied geochemistry with minor subjects mineralogy and thermodynamics at Brown University in Providence, where he worked with Bruno J. Giletti with the thesis Hydrothermal experiments on equilibrium partitioning and diffusion kinetics of Rb, Sr, and Na in biotite - alkali chloride solution systems PhD .

Scientifically, Hofmann mainly dealt with the isotope and trace element geochemistry of the earth's mantle and crust.

After completing his doctorate, he worked for two years as an assistant at the Laboratory for Geochronology in Heidelberg, and then for ten years until 1980 as a staff scientist at the Carnegie Institution in Washington / DC. In 1980 he was appointed Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz , where he set up the new Geochemistry Department, which he headed until his retirement in 2007.

Since his retirement he has worked as Adjunct Professor and Visiting Senior Research Scientist at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory , Columbia University, New York, and as Adjunct Professor at the University of Nanjing, China.

Hofmann was a founding member and temporarily president of the European Union of Geosciences , a scientific society with 3000 members. In 2014 he was the author of around 230 scientific publications.
