Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory

Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) is a geosciences research institute at Columbia University .

The institute was founded in 1949 at the suggestion of Maurice Ewing . Its current director is Sean C. Solomon .

It was renamed Lamont-Doherty in 1969 after a donation from the Henry L. and Grace Doherty Charitable Foundation . It is located in Palisades (New York) , a district of Orangetown , west of the Hudson River on the property of the eponymous banker Lamont, about 15 km north of Manhattan.
