The starting point of the Linha de Cascais, the Lisbon Cais do Sodré train station

The Linha de Cascais , rarely also Linha de Estoril , is a Portuguese railway line between the Portuguese capital Lisbon and the suburb of Cascais . The 25.4 km long route has 17 stations and stops and was opened in 1889. Today it is one of the most important suburban routes in the Lisbon area. The train operation is carried out by the CP subsidiary CP Urbanos de Lisboa .

history

The line was inaugurated on September 30, 1889 and in 1926 was the first Portuguese railway line to be electrified with 1500 volts direct current . Since the line was not operated by the state, but by the Sociedade de Estoril , the operation of the line was self-sufficient for a long time, the depot of the lines was and is located near Oeiras . Although there was and is still a connection at Alcântara train station with no overhead contact line, it was hardly used at the time.

After the Carnation Revolution in 1974, almost all private businesses and companies were nationalized, including the Sociedade de Estoril and the operation of the route. To this day, the route is a specialty, as the otherwise common voltage in Portugal is 25 kilovolts / 50 Hertz alternating voltage .

In the future, a general renovation of the entire route is planned, as there have been no significant changes to the safety technology or track construction since 1975. In addition to a possible extension by one track - the line is currently completely double-tracked - the city administration of Lisbon is planning to move the Alcântara station (with both the Mar and Terra station parts ) underground. In addition, an adjustment of the contact wire voltage is being considered so that the respective operating company can act more flexibly in vehicle procurement and a standardization of the vehicle fleet becomes possible. The renovation should be completed by 2013. [obsolete] With a view to the future voltage change, the State Railroad Comboios de Portugal ordered 36 dual-system multiple units in 2009.
