Parede (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈvilɐ dɐ pɐˈɾedɨ] ) is a Portuguese municipality in the district of Cascais and thus in the district of Lisbon and is located in the former province of Estremadura . The municipality has an area of 3.6 km² and is 6.5 km from the county seat and 12 km from Lisbon and is connected to the Linha do Estoril .

Until 1953 the place was part of the municipality of São Domingos de Rana . From then on, the place, with the localities of Buzano , Junqueiro , Madorna , Murtal , Penedo and Rebelva , was founded in the same district as a new municipality. The limits were established by Legislative Decree No. 39208 of May 14, 1953.

The parish of Parade is one of six parishes in the county of Cascais. It is bounded in the south by the Atlantic Ocean (Bay of Cascais), in the east by the municipality of Carcavelos , in the north by the municipality of São Domingos de Rana and to the west by the municipality of Estoril .

Parede has the status of a vila .

The main attraction of the place are its beaches, which with a high iodine content are suitable for people with bone problems. In addition, there are two hospitals specializing in orthopedics in the municipality near Avencas beach.

On September 29, 2013, the parishes of Parede and Carcavelos were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Carcavelos e Parede .

history

origin of the name

The origin of the name Parede (dt. Wall or wall ) is generally associated with the high number of stones and loose stone walls on site.

It is worth mentioning that the inhabitants of Parede are not only known by their actual name paredenses (dt. Paradenser) but also by the name of osgas (dt. Geckos ). In the 1920s there was a shed opposite the current fire station where theater was staged - the Teatro das Osgas .

colonization

From the time between the prehistoric settlement of the village of Parede over 4000 years ago and the late nineteenth century, little information is available about this place and its inhabitants. There are some traces of Roman presence (the oldest dates from the 1st century BC), as well as in Alcabideche , Cascais, Estoril and Sao Domingos de Rana, which indicate that Parede was settled at that time. Local stones were probably used to build buildings and artefacts before the Romans.

coat of arms

The heraldry of the city of Parede was designed by António de Sousa Lara and Benjamim Pinto Dinis in 1982.

park

With the Parque Morais , the municipality has a small leisure area. The park is located in the historic center of Perede and was previously privately owned by Domingos José de Morais , an early 20th century industrialist who sold the site to the Comissão de Iniciativa do Concelho de Cascais . In 1934 it was opened to the general public. The park is open from 8:30 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. in summer and from 8:30 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. in winter.

Beach

Parede beach is known for its high iodine content.
