The Kirchenfeld grammar school is a traditional grammar school in the city of Bern in Switzerland .
history
Before 1834 there was no grammar school in Bern. With the establishment of the University of Bern in 1834, which emerged from the academy, the literary school was created, which was called the Bern Cantonal School from 1856 to 1880 . Then it was combined with the municipal secondary school to form the municipal high school. Until 1885 it was located at Herrengasse 25, then at Waisenhausplatz 30 (see also Progr ). In 1926 the grammar school was moved to the newly built schoolhouse in the Kirchenfeld district . The schoolhouse, built in the years 1923–1926 by the architecture firm Widmer (Fritz Widmer) & Daxelhoffer , is a building in neoclassical style. In the auditorium there are five large wall paintings of large Bernese ( Theodor Kocher , Ferdinand Hodler , Philipp Emanuel von Fellenberg , Jeremias Gotthelf and Jakob Stämpfli ), painted in 1927/28 by Cuno Amiet , and in the middle wing of the third floor Victor Surbek repainted five wall paintings in 1928 the wanderings and homecoming of Odysseus .
Up until 2005 there were three different grammar schools in the school building with their own rectorate and secretariat. There was the MNG (mathematical and natural science high school), the LG (literary high school) and the WG (business high school). In 2005 the three grammar schools were merged, but kept their respective rectors. The MNG became the MN department (mathematics and natural sciences), the LG became the GH department (humanities and human sciences) and the WG became the WR department (economics and law).
Special
The high school has a chanson and a chamber choir (the latter dissolved in 2012), a big band and a theater group. Demonstrations take place every year in Bern.
The successful novel by the former student Peter Bieri Nachtzug nach Lisbo is partly set at the grammar school.
