The German construction company Schäfer-Bauten GmbH was a medium-sized family business. The company was active in the fields of building construction / turnkey construction, civil engineering and bridge construction / tunnel construction. It was founded in 1888 in Ibbenbüren in the Tecklenburger Land ( North Rhine-Westphalia ) by Karl Schäfer (1837-1914). Under his great-grandson Karl-Heinz Schäfer (1934–2011), the family company began to participate in major projects across Germany.

In addition to the main location in Ibbenbüren, the company had other locations in Gelsenkirchen and Berlin - Brandenburg . The company achieved a turnover of 102.736 million euros in 2006 and had 275 employees at the end of 2006.

On December 16, 2013, the company's management submitted an application to initiate insolvency proceedings in self-administration .

With effect from May 23, 2014 Betam GmbH took over the civil engineering and industrial construction.
