The valley bridge Exter (also Extertal bridge or also Exter valley bridge ) is a motorway bridge in the course of the German federal motorway 2 in the district Exter of the city of Vlotho in North Rhine-Westphalia .

It consists now of two separate bridges with a length of 202,50 or 235,50 m length and crosses the national road 772, the mill stream and a service road . In 1991 the bridge was included in the list of monuments of the Reichsautobahn era.

history

The original bridge was built between 1938 and 1939. On September 23, 1939, the section of today's A 2 between Bad Salzuflen and Bad Nenndorf leading over the bridge was opened to traffic, initially only for "official traffic". On November 13, 1940, the section was expanded to two lanes. The bridge originally consisted of nine arches with a span of 22.50 m each. It was made of unreinforced concrete , which was faced on the outside with natural stone made of shell limestone . This veneer took into account the increasingly prevalent tendency towards monumental architecture, as the impression of a stone arch bridge was created.

The first modernization

In 1963 and 1964, it was necessary to adapt to the increasing volume of traffic. The bridge was provided with a 20.70 m wide concrete slab, which protruded on the sides over the original viaduct .

The second modernization

With the fall of the Iron Curtain in November 1989, the traffic load on the BAB 2, an important east-west connection for road-based passenger and freight traffic, increased more and more. Also because of the world exhibition Expo 2000 in Hanover, the motorway should be expanded.

Since the bridge could not be changed to the extent required by the planned six-lane extension in the course of the expansion of the BAB 2 and the requirements of the monument protection, a second 235 was decided in addition to the originally 202.5 m long bridge on the north side To build a 50 m long bridge made of reinforced concrete . This consists of a total of 11 bridge fields, whereby care was taken that the pillars in the middle area disappeared behind those of the old bridge. Difficulties are caused by the soft subsoil, penetrated by springs, in the area of the new bridge, which required a pile foundation with piles up to 33 m long for the western abutment . Both bridges were provided with transparent noise barriers for reasons of noise protection . The distance between the two bridge structures is around 4 m.

The lanes in the direction of Hanover will be led over the historic bridge, while the lanes in the direction of the Ruhr area have been moved to the new bridge.
