Karl-Heinz Schäfer (born May 29, 1934 in Ibbenbüren , † July 28, 2011 in Osnabrück ) was a German civil engineer and contractor .

For many years he was the managing director and sole owner of the Schäfer-Bauten company .

Life

Karl-Heinz Schäfer was the great-grandson of the company's founder, Karl Schäfer (1837–1914). In 1953 he joined the family company, which was then called Karl Schäfer & Co. GmbH . After studying civil engineering , which he completed as a graduate engineer (Dipl.-Ing.) , He gained his first professional experience as a site manager on numerous construction sites in the Münsterland , Ruhr area and the Düsseldorf area . In 1959 he received full power of attorney and in 1962 individual power of attorney . In 1966 he was appointed managing director, and in 1971 he inherited the company as sole owner. From 1981 to 2004 he was also the sole managing director. He then left the management of the Schäfer Group to his daughter Stefanie Schäfer and his son Karl-Heinz Schäfer.

Under Karl-Heinz Schäfer, the construction company made a name for itself beyond the region and carried out construction projects nationwide. The hard coal-fired power plant in Schäfer's hometown Ibbenbüren , which started operations in 1985 , is one of the major projects in the implementation of which the family company was significantly involved .

He was also known nationwide for his many years of voluntary work in professional and economic-political organizations. There he emphatically represented the interests of medium-sized businesses . Schäfer was a member of the construction industry association of North Rhine-Westphalia in Düsseldorf. For more than 35 years he worked intensively in various committees of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) in Münster . From 1968 Schäfer was a member of the regional committee for the Tecklenburg district and later for the new Steinfurt district , which he took over as chairman in 1971. In 1972 he was elected to the IHK general assembly. For over 20 years he was involved in the budget committee and the transport committee. From 1976 to 1992, Karl-Heinz Schäfer also served as IHK vice-president.

He was also a long-time member of the board of the Allgemeine Ortskrankenkasse (AOK) .

Graduate engineer Karl-Heinz Schäfer died on July 28, 2011 at the age of 77 in Osnabrück. His resting place is in the family grave in the Ibbenbüren central cemetery .

Honors

Schäfer's voluntary commitment has been recognized several times. The IHK North Westphalia awarded him the golden badge of honor in 1991 for his services to the self-administration of the regional economy, and the IHK plenary assembly made him an honorary member in 1998.

In 1988 the Federal President awarded him the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon .
