history
New municipal high school
Fifteen years after the Second World War , the number of high school students rose to such an extent due to the baby boom year that the Kirchenfeld school building was no longer large enough to accommodate all the students. A new school house had to be built. The project was implemented between 1962 and 1965 by the architects Hans Andres and Felix Wyler at the end of Bern's Länggass district on the Bremgartenwald - in spring 1965 the new building could be occupied by the city's literary school and the city's high school. The building was officially inaugurated in 1966.
In 1973 a second, smaller building was built for the newly founded commercial high school. For many years, classes A (ancient Greek and Latin), B (Latin), C (mathematics and natural sciences) and E (economics) were taught in these three grammar schools in the Neufeld schoolhouse. Type D (new languages without Latin) was added later.
MAR and cantionalization
In 1995, the old school types were abolished with the maturity recognition regulations (MAR) and replaced by a new system with the option of choosing a major and a supplementary subject. The last year of the previous high school education, the upper prima, will also be canceled. The Realgymnasium is renamed the "Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftlichen Gymnasium" (MNG). With the cantonalization of public grammar schools in 1997, the city of Bern transferred its responsibility to the canton of Bern via the Neufeld grammar school .
With the elimination of the upper primes, classrooms became free. In 2001 the diploma middle school moved into the former commercial high school. In 2005 the three grammar schools and the diploma middle school, which is now called “Fachmittelschule Neufeld” (FMS), were merged into one grammar school, with the old grammar schools remaining as departments within the newly created grammar school. These were named Humanities and Human Sciences Department (GH), Mathematics and Natural Sciences Department (MN) and Economics and Law Department (WR).
In 2006 the school building was renovated. The vice-rectorates were concentrated on the second floor of the main building, and of the original three teachers' rooms there are currently two (one each for the high school departments and the FMS).
50 years anniversary
In 2016, events were held throughout the year to mark the school's 50th anniversary. This included a school day like in 1966 on February 16, a series of alumni meetings and the official ceremony on June 17 with the director of education Bernhard Pulver and the city president Alexander Tschäppät . Denise Carla Haas made the documentary "Half a Century" as part of the anniversary.
Outstanding performance
Although the school building has large sports facilities and well-equipped specialist rooms for natural sciences, it is the subjects of music and art that make the grammar school famous beyond the school boundaries. Another peculiarity is the establishment of a solidarity fund for the victims of the Holocaust.
music
The Gymnasium Neufeld is best known for its concerts. After Adolf “Döfe” Burkhardt (1934–2002) was hired as a music teacher in 1968, he expanded the music department and founded a choir and an orchestra. The concerts that have taken place twice a year since then are of high quality and enrich the city's cultural life. In 1992 Burkhardt was the first to receive the Sisyphus Prize from the city of Bern. In 1999, the choir and orchestra received the CHF 100,000 culture award from the Civic Community of Bern . Other music teachers involved in the concerts are Christoph Marti, Bruno Späti and Bernhard Kunz. In 2005 Bruno Späti received the Prize for Music of the Canton of Solothurn for his work as choir and orchestra conductor . Adrienne Rychard has strengthened the team since Bernhard Kunz retired. An alumni choir has existed since 2004 (see web links) with the aim of performing rarely sung works at a high musical level.
Artistic creation
The posters for the concerts are made by the Artistic Design department. The department also designs posters for the Festival International de Films Friborg . There were also several publications, including a comic for the detective novel “The Judge and His Executioner” by Friedrich Dürrenmatt . Also noteworthy is the mural in the interior of the school building (see web links).
