International Philosophy Olympiad

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Philosophy Olympiad ( IPO ) is an international essay competition for schoolchildren and is part of the Science Olympiad . Each participating country sends two candidates and the host country sends ten.

history

The IPO was founded in 1993 on the initiative of Ivan Kolev from the University of Sofia in Bulgaria. The aim of the Olympics was to help replace the Marxist-Leninist-oriented school subjects that were taught in Eastern European countries from 1947 to 1990. The first Olympiad took place in 1993 in Smoljan , Bulgaria, with delegations from three countries, Bulgaria, Romania (led by Elena Florina Otet) and Turkey (led by Nuran Direk). In the second edition, held in Petrich , Bulgaria, in 1994 , delegations from two other countries were added: Poland (chaired by Władysław Krajewski) and Germany (chaired by Gerd Gerhardt). Together with Hungary (head: Katalin Havas) these countries founded the IPO. The IPO received support from UNESCO. Since 2001 the IPO has been supported by the Fédération Internationale des Sociétés de Philosophie (FISP) and UNESCO .

In 2012 at the IPO in Oslo, Norway, the number of participating countries rose by a third to 40. The IPO planned for 2020 in Lisbon could not be carried out due to the effects of the corona pandemic. Instead, Slovenia is organizing an electronic IPO (e-IPO).

Qualification process in German-speaking countries

The qualification for the IPO is very similar in the three German-speaking countries Germany, Austria and Switzerland, despite minor national differences.

As the founding country, Germany has been participating in the IPO regularly since 1994. The qualification takes place in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia via a two-stage process and is advertised as an essay competition. Four essays from each of the five administrative districts will be selected from the essays submitted for the state competition by December 6th. Their authors and 6 others from other federal states (a total of 26 participants) are invited to the Philosophical Winter Academy in Münster. This takes place in January or February of the following year. As part of a four-day philosophical seminar, applicants write their essays (in English or French) through which two participants are selected for the IPO.

Austria was represented as a participating country for the first time in 2005 in Warsaw (Poland) at the IPO. In 2004, however, an Austrian was already there as a member of the German delegation in Seoul (South Korea). The qualification takes place via a two-stage process. In the first stage, the state competition, the authors of the two or three best essays in each state are selected. They are invited to the Philosophy Academy, within the framework of which the national competition takes place. A further essay competition will determine two participants for the IPO.

Switzerland was represented for the first time in 2006 in Cosenza (Italy) at the IPO. All students can take part in the Swiss Philosophy Olympiad if they have not yet graduated. The qualification takes place via a three-stage process: first round, semi-finals, national final. From the essays submitted in the first round, the best will be selected and their authors will be invited to semifinals. Here the candidates can qualify for the national final. In this the two participants are selected for the IPO.

Course of the competition

The IPO takes four to five days. As a rule, the competition takes place on the first day after arrival at the venue. A philosophical essay must be written on one of four given topics. This must be done in German, English, French or Spanish, but the selected language must not be the mother tongue or the official language of the country of origin. The essays will be judged by the teachers who traveled with them and by representatives of the FISP. The best essays will be rewarded with gold, silver and bronze medals or awards (Honorable Mention).
