Michael Boehler

Michael Johannes Böhler (* 1940 ) is a Swiss literary scholar .

Life

After the Matura type A in 1960, he studied German, Philosophy, Greek and sociology at the University of Zurich . During this time he was President of the Small Student Council and delegate of the Association of Swiss Student Unions in the Swiss National Commission for UNESCO. In 1967 he received his doctorate from Emil Staiger with the dissertation Forms and Changes of the Beautiful: Investigations into Adalbert Stifter's concept of beauty . In 1968 he passed the diploma for the higher teaching post of the Canton of Zurich in the subjects of German and philosophy.

He then was Assistant Professor at the State University of New York in Binghamton, New York (USA). In 1974 he became an associate professor . From 1974 to 1978 he was rector of the literary high school in Bern-Neufeld , 1975/76 senior rector and 1977/78 president of the rectors' conference of the agglomeration of Bern. 1975 followed the habilitation in modern German literature at the University of Zurich. In 1976 he completed his habilitation at the University of Bern . In 1978 he was appointed to the University of Zurich. In 1978/79 he was visiting professor (full) at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio (USA). Further visiting professorships followed in Lausanne, Geneva, St. Louis and Stanford. Several times he was the managing director of the German seminar. In 2004 he retired. In 2007 he was visiting professor at the University of Bern. His main research interests are German-language literature , literary theory and history , aesthetics , the canon of literature as well as literature and the Internet.

From 1984 to 1992 he was a member of the National Research Council of the Swiss National Science Foundation . In 1987 he became a member of the Board of Trustees of the Ernst Alker Foundation. From 1989 to 1996 he was Co-Head and National Coordinator of the Trilateral Research Priority Area “Differentiation and Integration. Language and literature of German-speaking countries in the process of modernization ». He has repeatedly served on the Standing Committee for the Humanities of the European Science Foundation . In 1992 he became a member of the Board of Trustees of the Gottfried Keller Edition Historical-Critical Foundation. From 1992 to 2003 he was President of the Board of Trustees of the Hermann Hesse Foundation and from 1996 to 2010 of the Board of Trustees of the Swiss Institute for Children and Youth Media of the Johanna Spyri Foundation. He was also a board member of the Swiss Society for Research in the 18th Century. From 1999 to 2009 he was a member and chairman of the international expert council of the research focus “Places of Memory” of the commission for cultural studies and theater history of the Austrian Academy of Sciences , later also chairman of the international advisory board. From 2000 to 2006 he headed the Commission for Research into the 18th Century and the Enlightenment in Switzerland of the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences . In 2000 he also became a committee member of the German Schiller Society and the German Literature Archive in Marbach . In 2007 he was a member and vice-president of the foundation board for a critical Robert Walser edition.

From 1984 to 2000 he was a member of the Scientific Council of the Society for Intercultural German Studies and the International Advisory Board of the journal German as a Foreign Language . From 1996 to 2004 he was a member of the Academy for Intercultural Studies at the University of Bayreuth and until 2006 of the Scientific Advisory Board for Studies in Contemporary German Literature (Stauffenburg Verlag). From 1993 to 2003 he was a member of the advisory board of Arbitrium magazine .
