Otto Aimé Alphons von Greyerz (born September 6, 1863 in Bern ; † January 8, 1940 there ) was a Swiss German studies specialist, educator and dialect writer .

Life

Otto von Greyerz was born as the son of the pastor Otto Wilhelm Aimé von Greyerz and Pauline Luise geb. Perforator. His great-grandfather was the naturalist Georg Forster , his brother the pastor Karl von Gruyères . Otto von Greyerz studied German, French and Classical Philology, History and Philosophy at the Universities of Bern , Göttingen and Berlin . In 1886 he passed the high school teacher examination in Bern. He was a member of the Zofingia and in 1886/1887 its central president. In 1887 he received his doctorate from the University of Bern with a thesis on Beat Ludwig von Muralt .

From 1888 to 1891 he taught German and French at the American Robert College in Istanbul . In 1891 the University of Bern qualified him for "History of German Language and Literature", but he did not teach and resigned in 1893. From 1891 to 1907 von Greyerz taught German at the municipal high school in Bern and from 1907 to 1915 taught German and English Rural education home Glarisegg near Steckborn . In 1914 the University of Bern qualified him again, this time for "Language and literature in German-speaking Switzerland, the art of teaching higher German, German pronunciation and the art of speaking". In 1915 von Greyerz was appointed to the teaching college of the University of Bern and in 1916 he was appointed associate professor and in 1921 full professor for "Language and literature in German-speaking Switzerland and the methodology of German teaching". In 1925/26 he was dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and History. In 1933 he retired. He died in Bern in 1940, he is buried in the Schosshalden cemetery there .

Otto von Greyerz was a co-founder of the Bernese Heimatschutzverein, founder and long-time director of the Berner Heimatschutz Theater and an essential sponsor of the new Bern adult education center . He wrote poems and plays in Bern German and Standard German . As an influential literary critic - one must say: as a conservative «Bernese literary pope» - he made a strong case for dialect poetry and for poets who were on his line. He was friends with Emil Balmer , Karl Grunder , Emanuel Friedli , Simon Gfeller , Josef Reinhart , Rudolf von Tavel and other authors. In 1920 he was one of the founders of the cooperative for the publication of the Swiss Monthly Issues for Politics and Culture.

Von Gruyères campaigned for a reform of German teaching in schools. He wanted to convey a feeling for language: "Language skills instead of memorization , literature instead of literary history." The starting point should always be the dialect spoken in private; From this point of view, one should then gradually approach the written language. With this attitude he stood in the continuation of Gustav Adolf Seiler and Jost Winteler .

His best-known work is Im Röseligarte, a collection of folk songs that appeared in six volumes from 1908 and has been published several times. This work has shaped Swiss folk music to this day, and a CD Röseli Rock was released in 2002 . Stephan Eicher , Rumpelstilz and others added songs from the Röseligarte to their repertoire. Von Greyerz began work on a Bern German dictionary, but died before it was finished. The work remained unfinished for a long time until Ruth Bietenhard completed the work in 1976.
