Switzerland in German intellectual life

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Switzerland in German Spiritual Life is a German-language book series with two sub - series . The full title of the more extensive main series is Switzerland in German Spiritual Life: A Collection of Illustrations and Texts , the other is the Illustrated Series . The series was edited by the German Germanist Harry Maync (1874-1947), who was a professor at the University of Bern and from 1929 to 1939 at the Philipps University of Marburg . The series was published in Frauenfeld and Leipzig by Verlag Huber and partly by Leipzig Verlag H. Haessel (which also published C. F. Meyer's works). The first volume appeared in 1922, further volumes in rapid succession until the early 1930s. The double volume of the numbers 87/88 appeared in 1938, the last volume 89 then in 1943. The illustrated series appeared 1923–1942, volume 23 in 1936, volume 24 in 1942.

The author Anselm Gerhard points out that the first movement of the first volume, Historical Folk Songs of German Switzerland by Otto von Greyerz, seems to have "some programmatic weight":

«From the heroic age of our people, from the 13th to the beginning of the 16th century, we have songs that tell of the great historical experiences of the Confederation. They are called historical songs and thus designate a genre of poetry that was widespread all over Germany, but reached the richest and most peculiar bloom in the narrow area of Alemannic Switzerland.

Gerhard states that the selection of the book series was largely shaped by the Philosophical-Historical Faculty of the University of Bern and that "decidedly Nazi-oriented careerists in this faculty" such as Walter Porzig and Helmut de Boor had "just not been given a forum".
