Albert Johannes Köster (born November 7, 1862 in Hamburg , † May 29, 1924 in Leipzig ) was a German German philologist and theater scholar .

Life

As the son of a wine wholesaler, Köster attended the Johanneum in Hamburg, where he graduated from high school in 1882. He then studied law and Berlin philology and literary history at the Universities of Tübingen and Leipzig . In 1887 he received his doctorate in history under Wilhelm Maurenbrecher and Georg Voigt . The topic of his dissertation was: “The Worms Annals. A source investigation ”.

From 1887 he was a private scholar in Hamburg and in 1892 got a position as ao at the University of Marburg . Professor of Modern German Language and German Literature History, which he held until 1899. From 1893 he was also one of the directors of the German Department of the University of Marburg.

In 1899 he was appointed full professor for modern German language and literature at the University of Leipzig as the successor to Rudolf Hildebrand . There he was director of the German seminar together with Eduard Sievers . During his time in Leipzig, he received calls to prestigious chairs, such as the successor to his mentor and friend Erich Schmidt at the University of Berlin or the University of Vienna , which he refused.

Köster shaped the reputation of Leipzig German studies for over a quarter of a century. He was an excellent expert on the works of Goethe, but published comparatively few larger works and was best known for the publication of the " Letters of Frau Rath Goethe " and a critical edition of the works of Theodor Storm .

In addition to his achievements in the field of literary history, Köster was one of the first scientists to attempt methodically based scientific theater research. He also put together a collection of stage history. This was acquired by the Deutsches Theater-Museum in Munich after his death , but most of it was bombed in 1944. At his request, his extensive library was sold at an auction by Walter de Gruyter & Co. on December 26-27. Auctioned January 1925.
