Werner Deetjen

Paul Otto Werner Deetjen (born April 3, 1877 at Gut Koselitz, Schwetz district (Weichsel) , West Prussia ; † May 21, 1939 in Weimar ) was a German specialist in German and librarianship .

Life

After his doctorate as Dr. phil. in 1901 in Leipzig Deetjen worked there as a private scholar before he became a private lecturer in German literary history at the Technical University of Hanover in 1905 . In 1909 he was appointed professor.

In 1916 he became director of the Grand Ducal Library (today the Duchess Anna Amalia Library ) in Weimar, in 1917 he became a member of the Executive Committee of the Goethe Society and from 1917 to 1920 he was part-time Secretary General of the German Schiller Foundation . In 1920 he became a member of the Academy of Charitable Sciences in Erfurt . From 1921 until his death he was President of the German Shakespeare Society .

In 1928 Deetjen became second chairman of the German Schiller Foundation and in 1931 a board member of the Goethe Society. Deetjen belonged to the ethnically -minded, anti-Semitic fighting league for German culture . From 1935 to 1939 Deetjen was a board member of the German Dante Society and from 1937 to 1938 chairman of the executive committee of the Goethe Society.

Deetjens grave is located right behind the Weimar Princely Crypt on the honorary grave field of the historical cemetery in Weimar.
