Heinrich Rudolf Hildebrand (born March 13, 1824 in Leipzig ; † October 28, 1894 ibid) was a German specialist in German , teacher , educator and linguist .
Life
Hildebrand was born in Leipzig in 1824. He was the son of typesetter Heinrich Hildebrand (died 1850) and his wife Amalia Hildebrand, née Porges (died 1867). His father originally came from Arnstadt in Thuringia and moved to Leipzig for professional reasons. He worked as a factor in the local Brockhaus printing company. So he belonged to the so-called labor aristocracy .
Before starting school, he received private lessons in Latin and French from his father . From 1829 to 1836 he studied at the Naumann School , a private school for poorer sections of the population in Naundorf . In 1836 he switched to the Thomas School in Leipzig , where he passed his Abitur in 1843.
First, from 1843 he attended lectures by Moritz Wilhelm Drobisch , Christian Wilhelm Niedner , Johann Christian Friedrich Tuch and Christian Hermann Weisse in the subjects of theology and philosophy at the University of Leipzig . From 1844 to 1848 he studied Classical and German Philology . In addition to Niedner, Tuch and Weisse, his professors included Gustav Hartenstein , Moriz Haupt and Gottfried Hermann . In 1848 he passed his state examination with the thesis on Walther von der Vogelweide at Haupt .
He then became a proofreader and translator for the Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung in Leipzig. From 1848 to 1868 he worked as a teacher for German , Latin, ancient Greek , geography and history at the St. Thomas School. He also taught at the German School for Booksellers in Leipzig. From 1852 to 1890 he worked on the German dictionary of the Brothers Grimm . On the recommendation of his former professor Haupt, he became a proofreader in 1852. In 1856 he was commissioned to design the letter K of the fifth volume. After Wilhelm Grimm's death in 1859, he also devoted himself to the letter G , the fourth volume in the first section. Together with Karl Weigand from Gießen he finally became editor after the death of the other brother Jacob in 1863 . Before his almost complete blindness in 1890, he stopped working on the dictionary.
In 1867 he founded the Germanist circle "Vogelweide" in Leipzig. In 1868 he became associate professor for German language and German literature at Leipzig University. In 1873 he turned down offers to the universities of Prague , Greifswald and Rostock . A year later he was appointed full professor for modern German literature and language from the 16th to 19th centuries. In his teaching, he placed particular emphasis on the Nibelungenlied , in works by Walther von der Vogelweide, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , Minnesang , the folk song of German grammar and etymology, and word and language research . He also dedicated his research to Meier Helmbrecht , Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock , Johann Gottfried Herder , Kudrun , Friedrich Schiller , language history , vocabulary research and German lessons . In Leipzig he founded the first Germanic Institute . Because of gout , he could only give his lectures from home from 1888 onwards. Hildebrand lost his eyesight with increasing age and died in Leipzig in 1894 at the age of 70.
He was friends with the Austrian writer Franz Michael Felder .
