Gustav Hartenstein

Gustav Hartenstein (born March 18, 1808 in Plauen , † February 2, 1890 in Jena ) was a German philosopher.

Hartenstein attended the Princely School in Grimma from 1822 and then studied theology and philosophy in Leipzig from 1826 , including with Wilhelm Traugott Krug and Wilhelm Wachsmuth , as well as philology with Gottfried Hermann . After his doctorate (1831) and habilitation (1833), he was appointed associate professor in 1834 and full professor at the University of Leipzig in 1836 . In 1846, the year it was founded, he was elected a full member of the Royal Saxon Society of Sciences .

After his retirement in 1859, Hartenstein went to Jena and took over the management of the university library there in 1878. He was friends with Moritz Wilhelm Drobisch and helped him in 1887 with the publication of the last edition of his well-known logic textbook.

He was a supporter of Herbartianism and represented Herbart's teaching in numerous works.
