Die Grenzbote was a national-liberal magazine that appeared from 1841 to 1922 partly weekly, partly bi-weekly.

history

The magazine was founded in Brussels in 1841 by Ignaz Kuranda , who was editor until 1848. From 1842 Die Grenzbote was published by FW Grunow in Leipzig, later in Berlin . From 1848 Gustav Freytag (until 1861 and again from 1867 to 1870) and Julian Schmidt (until 1861) were their editors and, through many of their own contributions, made them the most influential mouthpiece of the national-liberal bourgeoisie until the establishment of the empire in 1871. In 1870 Grunow became the sole owner and Hans Blum led the editorial office until 1878, when Johannes Grunow took over the publication in conjunction with Gustav Wustmann. Since then, the magazine's orientation has changed from a purely liberal to a more conservative one. In 1849 “Die Grenzboten” were banned in Austria . Moritz Busch was one of the most productive editors from 1856 to 1870 and 1878 to 1890 .

The subtitle was initially “Blätter für Deutschland und Belgium”, from 1842 “A German Revue”, from 1844 “Journal for Politics and Literature” and from 1871 “Journal for Politics, Literature and Art”.

The magazine was important because Schmidt and Freytag developed the theory of realism here . In the decade since 1848 they were decisive for the literary discourse in Germany.
