As a supporter of the German Revolution of 1848/1849 , after its failure in 1851, he went to North America, but soon returned to Germany disappointed and published a travel report. In the following years he traveled extensively in the Orient and wrote books about Egypt , Greece and Palestine , some of which he wrote for the 3rd section of the Austrian Lloyd , also as a travel guide . 1856–1864 and 1865–1870 he was the editor of the Leipziger Grenzbote , and in 1864/65 he worked as a press agent for Duke Friedrich von Augustenburg .

In 1873 he became editor of the Hannoversche Kurier , in 1878 the Berlin correspondent of the journal Die Grenzboten . In 1880 he published his book Israel and the Goyim. Contributions to the assessment of the Jewish question , a collection and supplement of contributions that were previously published in the journal Die Grenzboten .
