August Löffler (born May 24, 1822 in Munich ; † January 19, 1866 there ) was a German painter .
Life
Löffler formed under Heinrich Adam and under Carl Rottmann , whom he preferred to join. At first he painted pictures from the Isar valley near Munich, in 1846 he made an excursion to Istria and Northern Italy and in 1849 to the Orient, motivated to this trip in particular by the execution of a panorama of Jerusalem , which he undertook for Halbreiter based on his sketches (now, as Gift of Maximilian II of Bavaria, in the Lateran).
He passed through Egypt, Palestine, Asia Minor and returned to Munich at the end of 1850, from where he went to Dresden and Berlin in 1851. In the following years a significant number of landscapes from Palestine and Greece were created for the kings of Prussia and Württemberg. In 1853 Löffler accompanied Ludwig Thiersch to Greece and collected a wealth of studies there. On his return he painted a large picture: Delphi and studied the old masters in Venice and Milan (1856).
In the following year he painted Jerusalem , Bethlehem , Jaffa , Saba , Damascus and The Red Sea for the King of Württemberg and drew the cartoons The Finding of Moses and God Appears to Elias on Mount Horeb . In 1863 he painted Athens from the grove of Kolonos and a view of Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives , then four large murals for the hall in Bad Kochel : Memphis , Jerusalem , Athens and Rome .
