Ludwig Thiersch

Ludwig Thiersch (born April 12, 1825 in Munich ; † May 10, 1909 there ) was a German painter .
Life
Ludwig Thiersch was a younger brother of the surgeon Carl Thiersch . After graduating from high school in 1841 at the (today's) Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich, he attended the academy there in order to devote himself to sculpture under Schwanthaler, but after a few years switched to painting, where he was a student of Heinrich Maria von Hess , Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld and in particular of Karl Schorn was. After he had painted a Sakuntala (1848) and a camisard scene , he went to Rome in 1849 , where he stayed for three years and painted scenes from Italian folk life and a Job among his friends . In the Eternal City, he turned his attention to the older masters in particular, including the mosaics in the churches of Rome.
In autumn 1852 Thiersch traveled with his father, the philologist Friedrich Thiersch , to Athens , where he worked for three years as a teacher at the School of Applied Arts and decorated the Byzantine church of St. Nicodemus with frescoes. In 1855 he returned home. The following year he was called to Vienna , where he also did frescoes on the Holy Trinity in the Greek Church . After he had executed the cartons Charon designed in Rome as a soul guide for Baron Sina , Bakchos ' entry into the grove of Kolonos and Thetis ' lamentation for Achilles , in 1860 he accepted a call to Saint Petersburg , where he painted numerous pictures in the chapels of the palaces the Grand Duke Nicholas and Michael and painted in the Protestant Katharinenkirche. On his return to Munich in 1864 created for the Collegiate Church in Kempten , the resurrection of the daughter of Jairus and Christ in Gethsemane , 1866, the preaching of Paul on the Areopagus , and in the years that followed Christ at the Pool of Bethesda , a Ceres who seeks her daughter , a Christ in the desert , Alaric celebrated as victor in Athens and Christ carrying the cross .
In 1880 Thiersch was commissioned to paint several paintings for the new Greek Church in London , including the oil painting Christ as a Child Friend . Then the oil paintings followed Christ's victory over the night of darkness , Eurydice by Hermes the Orpheus snatched (1884), Christ on the Calvary mythological (1886) and other images content. In 1891 he was commissioned to paint the iconostasis pictures for the newly built Greek church in Paris . In 1893 he painted a blessing Christ for the Protestant Church in Reichenhall , in 1894 an Ascension of Christ for the chapel of the Syrian orphanage in Jerusalem and in 1895 Christ in prayer to Gethsemane for the Protestant St. Mark's Church in Munich. In addition, he became known to other circles through various genre paintings from the Bavarian mountains and was very active as a portrait painter.
