Karl Lambert Schorn (born October 16, 1800 in Düsseldorf , † October 7, 1850 in Munich ) was a German history painter . In addition, Schorn was also known as a chess player.

Artistic way of life

Schorn was a nephew of the art writer Ludwig von Schorn (1793–1842). He attended the Düsseldorf Academy , then from 1824 to 1827 in Paris the studios of Antoine-Jean Gros and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and came to Munich with Peter von Cornelius , where he continued his education during a second stay under Heinrich Maria von Hess . In 1832 he went to Berlin . This is where u. a. some historical genre pictures , including the depicted Wallensteiner playing cards . After a study trip to Italy, Schorn returned to Munich in the early 1840s. He reached the peak of his career when the Academy of Fine Arts there appointed him professor in 1847 .

His main works include Pygmalion ; Maria Stuart and Riccio ; Charles V in the monastery of San Yuste ; Pope Paul III as he has the portrait of Luther painted by Cranach shown to him ; Cromwell, reading the Bible to his generals before the Battle of Dunbar ; the interrogation of the Anabaptists before the bishop after the capture of Munster ; and the unfinished monumental painting The Deluge, ordered by King Ludwig I for the Neue Pinakothek .

Karl Schorn was married to a sister of the two painters Ferdinand and Carl von Piloty . Both were also pupils of Schorn or were artistically influenced by him.

Chess player

In Berlin, between 1836 and 1840, Schorn joined the Pleiades , a group of prominent chess masters who published fundamental analytical works in the field of chess.

Schorn himself was far from the idea of ​​a scientific penetration of the game. He was considered a "naturalist" and a respected outsider in the Berlin master class around Ludwig Bledow . A number of parts of Schorn's from this phase have been preserved.
