The Greek Church of the Holy Trinity (also: Church of the Holy Trinity ) is an Orthodox church in Vienna's 1st  district of Inner City at Fleischmarkt  13 in the former " Greek Quarter ".

It is the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Austria Exarchate of Hungary and Central Europe of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople , while the Church of St. George on Hafnersteig is the representation in the Greek Oriental Church in Austria .

history

As early as 1782, the Count's Stockhammer's house is said to have been converted into a simple Greek church. The Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity was founded in 1787 as a result of the tolerance patent decreed by Emperor Joseph II in 1781 . While the church St. George, the subjects of the Ottoman Empire represented in Vienna, were the members of the Holy. Trinity subjects of the Habsburgs , and after 1848 the Empire of Austria / Austria-Hungary . In 1837 the community acquired a plot of land adjacent to the Sankt Marxer Friedhof and built its own department on it.

architecture

The Greek-Austrian entrepreneur Georg Simon von Sina brought Theophil von Hansen from Athens to Vienna to plan his commercial buildings. He also commissioned him to remodel the church built by Peter Mollner in 1782–87 . This began in 1856, the inauguration took place on December 21, 1858. Subsequently, by 1861, Hansen built the porch with the octagonal tower and domed dome in Byzantine forms.

Theophil Hansen, who had studied Byzantine art in Athens , built as an architect in the style of Nordic Classicism , to which he gave a Greek character in his buildings in Athens. During the construction of the church in Vienna, he designed a building in the Byzantine style for the first time.

The reason for this was probably that, on the one hand, Classicism is hardly suitable for sacred buildings, and on the other hand, the church, as a Greek-Oriental congregation, is also open to other Orthodox Christians and was also used by other Orthodox congregations until their own churches were built, for example from the Serbian community , which had its own church built in the 3rd district in the early 1890s .

The single-aisled interior of the church has a rectangular choir and shows allusions to baroque church architecture, such as can be found in southern Germany and Austria. That also does not otherwise occur in Hansen's work. Carl Rahl painted the pictures on the facade and in the vestibule, the frescoes in the church are by Ludwig Thiersch .

Sina’s orders in Vienna contributed significantly to the breakthrough of the architect Theophil Hansen, who a few years later was commissioned with important buildings such as the parliament building on Ringstrasse .

use

Since 1963 the Church of the Holy Trinity has been the cathedral of the Greek Orthodox Metropolitan in Austria . The offices of the Metropolitans, the Greek school and a Greek library are now housed in the premises above the church. The parish is not far from the church in Greeksgasse.
