The Salvatorkirche (also: Salvatorkapelle ) in the complex of the Old Town Hall in Vienna was built in the 14th century. In 1871 it was given to the Old Catholic Church and has been the Bishop's Church of the Old Catholic Church in Austria ever since . Until then, it served as the town hall's house chapel.

With the entrance from Salvatorgasse , a splendid Renaissance portal, you can visit one of the few architectural monuments from the Renaissance period that still exist in Vienna today .

A comprehensive interior renovation was carried out in 1971 and 1972, the high altar was also set back and a people's altar was set up.

The pastoral care area of ​​the Old Catholic Parish of St. Salvator includes parts of Vienna, Burgenland and a diaspora parish in Baden near Vienna in the St. Anna Chapel .

The "Old Catholic parish of St. Salvator (Inner Vienna)" can be traced back to 1871. The state recognition of this parish was granted by the imperial-royal government in 1877. From 1879 the German language was introduced instead of the Latin liturgy and communion in both forms . On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the state's recognition, a festival service was held in 1957, in which Federal President Adolf Schärf and other politicians took part. In November 1969, Cardinal Franz König repealed the interdict imposed on St. Salvator in 1871 . In 1998, Bishop Bernhard Heitz ordained a woman for the first time in the Salvator Church . In 2003, Joris Vercammen , in his function as Old Catholic Archbishop of Utrecht and Honorary Primate of the Old Catholic Church Fellowship, visited the Salvatorkirche and other Austrian parishes for the first time.

The program for the ninth Long Night of the Churches in 2013 was presented jointly in St. Salvator by the Old Catholic Bishop Johannes Okoro , who has been in office since 2008 , the Evangelical Superintendent Hansjörg Lein and the Roman Catholic Episcopal Vicar Dariusz Schutzki. As part of the World Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, an ecumenical vespers took place in the Salvator Church on January 13, 2016. The ecumenical representatives present included the retired Old Catholic Bishop John Okoro and the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Vienna Christoph Cardinal Schönborn .

Organ of the Salvatorkirche in Vienna

The organ of the Salvatorkirche dates from 1750 and was probably built by the organ builder Gottfried Sonnholz . In 1987 it was restored by Herbert Gollini and returned to its original state. The instrument has seven registers on one manual . The playing and stop actions are mechanical.
