St. Laurence (Prague)
The St. Laurentius Church on the Laurenziberg (Kostel sv. Vavřince na Petříně) is the cathedral church of the bishop of the Old Catholic Church in the Czech Republic . The church dedicated to St. Lawrence is located on the Petřín in Prague . With other important buildings, it is one of the sights of the Lesser Town of Prague . The German name Laurenziberg for Petřín is derived from this church.
history
It is first mentioned in 1135. It is believed that this chapel was built in 991 by St. Adalbert in place of a pagan cult site, as the statue from 1824 and the ceiling fresco in the sacristy from 1735 show. Under Charles IV , the church was included in the walling.
architecture
Remains of the Romanesque church are preserved in the choir and in the southern part of the baroque church built by the Prague builder Johann Ignaz Palliardi between 1735 and 1770 . Its broken-convex north facade is reminiscent of a rugged ledge. Three statues rise above it, in the middle an allegory of piety , on the left St. Johannes Nepomuk and on the right probably representing Maria Magdalena . In a wall niche is the statue of St. Adalbert.
Interior
In the interior, on the right side altar, there is a picture of the martyrdom of St. Laurentius by the painter Jean Claude Monnot from Burgundy . The current equipment of the choir was designed by the architect Jiří Pelcl . In the sacristy there is a ceiling painting depicting the legend of the founding of the church by Adalbert of Prague.
Surroundings
Next to the church there is a Calvary chapel from 1735, which is decorated with a sgraffito depicting the resurrection of Jesus . A Way of the Cross was laid out below the church in 1836 , the last station of which, the Holy Sepulcher Chapel from 1738, was built on the model of the Jerusalem Church of the Holy Sepulcher .

The Old Catholic Church has been using the entire building complex since 1994. St. Laurentius has been the Old Catholic cathedral church for the Czech Republic since November 1995.
