history

Origin of the Old Catholic Church

The Old Catholic Church of the Netherlands came into being in the first quarter of the 18th century, when part of the clergy of the Catholic Church that remained after the Reformation , contrary to the will of the Curia, elected an archbishop of Utrecht and consecrated him as bishop in 1724 by the missionary bishop Dominique Varlet has been.

Previous buildings

The first old Catholic bishop's church in Utrecht was a Schuilkerk on the Mariahoek, also under the patronage of St. Gertrud von Nivelles . The predecessor building on the site of today's St. Gertrudis Cathedral was the medieval St. Mary's Church, which was demolished in 1844 due to its dilapidation, and the design language of the current building takes up.

architecture

The church was designed by the architect EG Wentinck Jr., who had built the parish rectory back in 1911. The neo-Romanesque style is consciously reminiscent of that of St. Mary's Church. The neo-Gothic style was avoided here as it was seen at the time as an expression of Roman triumphalism. The builder was the Utrecht pastor Comelis Deelder , who had the following written on the foundation stone (today behind the altar): Votum Vovit Deo (“He made a vow before God”).

Based on the Romanesque architectural style of the Middle Ages, the interior of the church was richly decorated with paintings. This includes the setting of the triumphal arch based on motifs from San Apollinare in Classe zu Ravenna . The communion pews refer to those of San Apre in Tuscany . The wrought-iron border of the baptistery can be found in the exact counterpart in the church of Santa Prassede in Rome , while the candlesticks correspond to those in the Aachen Cathedral . The mosaics above the door sections in the west gable depict St. Gertrude and St. Willibrord , the first bishop of Utrecht.

Furnishing

The high altar , also known as the sacrament altar , dates from 1914 and is a gift from a parishioner. On it stands a splendid tabernacle , which was made in 1731 by the Utrecht silversmith Nicolaas Verhaar and donated to the church. On the door is a depiction of the wedding at Cana , during which Jesus turned water into wine. Medieval relics of Saints Agnes , Laurentius , Cunera , Gregorius , Fredericus and Bernulfus are kept inside the high altar, most of them have a connection to Utrecht.

"(" Praise be to you, Lord our God, King of the world, who makes bread come out of the earth. Praise be to you, Lord our God, King of the world, creator of the fruit of the vine. ") Next to the altar is the cathedra of the archbishop and there are the choir stalls of the metropolitan chapter from 1880.

On the altar of the left side chapel is a wooden statue of Mary with the baby Jesus, which comes from the Buurkerk and was created around 1470 by Adrian von Wesel . In 1580 members of the community hid the picture because of the persecution by the Reformed, after the establishment of the Schuilkerk it found its place there. When this was abandoned in 1989, the statue was placed in St. Gertrudis Cathedral.

In the right side chapel there is the Jakobuskapelle with part of the altar originally carved from oak for the St. Jakobuskirche. There is another tabernacle from the 17th century, which also comes from the Schuilkerk.
