Friedrich I of Utrecht (left: Frederik van Utrecht ) (* around 780 ; † July 18, 838 in Utrecht ) was Bishop of Utrecht from 826 to 838 and is venerated as a saint .

Life

The life and work of the bishop is partly only passed down through the legendary hagiography . He then came from a Frisian noble family. Through his pious mother he came into the care of Bishop Ricfried and was educated at the cathedral school in Utrecht. After that he was ordained a priest and lived as a penitent.

After Ricfried's death, he was elected his successor as bishop in 826. He tried to do missionary work to get rid of pagan customs in his diocese. Together with the canon Odolfus, he also fought heretical ideas in parts of the Utrecht Church. The bishop was educated and in contact with Rabanus Maurus . He dedicated one of his works to him.

In the conflict between Emperor Ludwig the Pious and his sons, Friedrich supported the sons. His assassination after a mass was possibly connected with this faction. Another reason, as contemporaries suspected, could have been his rejection of Ludwig's marriage to the Empress Judith .

After his death he was venerated as a saint. His feast day is July 18th. He is usually shown pierced by two swords in front of the altar.
