Byzantine Empire
- September 8th : Nine year old Constantine VI. becomes emperor of Byzantium after the death of his father Leo IV under the reign of his mother Irene . The last emperor of the Syrian dynasty comes to the throne at the height of the Byzantine iconoclasm .
- The Abbasids under Caliph Al-Mahdi and Prince Hārūn ar-Raschīd used the change of power in the Byzantine Empire to attack.
Western and Central Europe
- The West Slavic tribal association of the Abodrites enters into an alliance with the Franconian Empire under Charlemagne against the Saxons , which has feudal traits and probably makes the Abodrites Frankish vassals.
- around 780: Æthelberht II. succeeds his late father Æthelred I as King of East Anglia .
- around 780: The Viking Age on Orkney begins. The strategic position of the islands between Norway and the Viking target area in the British Isles makes them an ideal starting point for forays .
