Franconian Empire / Saxon Wars
- Charlemagne holds a court day in Lippspringe . Saxony is divided into counties.
- Capitulatio de partibus Saxoniae : Charlemagne orders that any resistance by the Saxons against the mission and the Franconian county constitution is cruelly punished; the regulations, which are equivalent to a martial law, are toned down againfrom 797 after the extensive safeguarding of the Frankish rule.
- October: As a reaction to the defeat of a Franconian army on the Dachtelfeld in the Süntelgebirge , in which several counts also fall, Charlemagne has 4500 hostages of the rebellious Saxons executed in a blood court in Verden an der Aller , according to contemporary sources ; this may be an exaggeration. However, it is undisputed that the Franks in Saxony pursue a tough occupation policy. Duke Widukind escapes to Denmark .
