Frankish kingdom
- February 1: Hadrian I. is named as the successor to Stephen III , who died on January 24 . elected Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. The Lombard king Desiderius tried in vain to persuade him, like his predecessor, to adopt a policy that was friendly to the Lombards and hostile to the Franks.
- Summer: Charlemagne starts war against the Saxons , conquers the Eresburg (now Marsberg – Obermarsberg south of Paderborn ) and destroys the Irminsul , a Saxon sanctuary. Then he moves to the Weser; Here he negotiates with the Saxons, receives 12 hostages and returns to France (Reichsannalen 780).

- After the end of the reigns of King Osmund and his fellow kings Oswald and Oslac , Sussex became dependent on Mercia . Ealdwulf , the successor and last ruler of Sussex, is wholly dependent on Offa of Mercia .

- Morocco is annexed to the empire of the Arab Abbasids .
- An uprising by the Kharijites under Abu Quna and Ibn Rustam against the Abbasids and their governors in present-day Tunisia , the Muhallabites , fails at Kairouan ; Ibn Rustam, founder of the Rustamid dynasty , retires to Tahert (now Algeria ).
