Muhallabites

Muhallabites was a dynasty of governors in Ifriqiya (771-793)

The Muhallabites were the Abbasid governors in the province of Ifrīqiya / Tunisia . As such, they gained extensive autonomy from the caliphate and were able to maintain Arab rule against the uprising of the Kharijite Berbers (771–772). However , they could not prevent the formation of an empire by the Idrisids in Morocco and the Rustamids in central Algeria .

Under the Muhallabites there was a considerable economic and cultural boom in the Ifriqiya province. Agriculture in particular flourished again with the expansion of irrigation systems. The Muhallabite governors were overthrown by a military uprising in 793 . In the ensuing anarchy, the Aghlabids used by the Abbasids prevailed and founded an independent emirate (800–909).
