Viking Age in England
- June 8 : The first recorded mentioned attack of the Vikings to the English monastery Lindisfarne starting Viking Age in England the Heptarchy .
Franconian Empire / Moors
- The first version of the Capitulare de villis appears in Aquitaine . Later, perhaps in 812 , Charlemagne took over this administrative reform of the domains for the entire Frankish Empire : the domain administrators were obliged to report to the king on their income every year; the over 200 counts of the empire are controlled by royal messengers ( missi dominici ); at the Carolingian court, administration is carried out by the Palatinate Court and Chancellery.
- The Franks lose Girona to the Moors under Emir Hischam I of Córdoba , by whom they are defeated at Narbonne . The reconquest was not successful until 801 .
- The Moors are defeated at Lugo against Asturias without this having any significant influence on the Moorish rule.
Africa
- Another (unsuccessful) uprising in Egypt against the rule of the Abbasids
- Overthrow of the Abbasid governors of the North African province of Ifrīqiya from the Muhallabite dynasty ; around 800 the Aghlabids succeed them.

Economy / science and technology
On orders from Charlemagne, the Carolina fossa is being excavated near Treuchtlingen. The three kilometer long canal connects the Swabian Rezat and the Altmühl . Statements by chroniclers that unfortunate soil and weather conditions led to the abandonment of the project are now viewed as inaccurate, because the majority of contemporary sources report that the sewer was ready and usable. The fact that it is hardly used and is soon abandoned after its construction is probably due to the great effort that the canal passage requires and the tolls that are supposed to amortize the construction.
religion
- Liudger founds a monastery near the old Saxon settlement of Mimigernaford on the Aa , after which the place Münster is named. Münster becomes 805 diocese.
- King Offa of Mercia founds the Abbey of St Albans .
