Europe

Text of the Admonitio generalis in a late 9th century manuscript
  • Charlemagne issued the Admonitio generalis , a reform program for the Frankish Empire and one of the most famous capitularies of all.
  • Charlemagne leads an army from Franconia, Saxony, Frisians, Sorbs and Abodrites on a first campaign against the Slavic tribal association of the Wilzen on the other side of the Elbe . The Franconian army reached the Peene . In the Annales regni Francorum and the Metz Annals , Witzan is mentioned for the first time in this context as the velvet ruler of the West Slavic tribe of the Abodrites ; he accompanies Karl on this campaign.
  • After lengthy negotiations, Dragowit , the velvet ruler of Wilz, opens his fortress to the Frankish king and surrenders without a fight. In recognition of Karl's supremacy, the captured princes of the small tribes near the Elbe also submit, swear allegiance to Karl and take hostages. According to the Carolingian doctrine of an imperial border on the Elbe , Charlemagne does not leave any occupation troops behind in the Wilzen area. Karl only makes political changes in the Prignitz : to pacify them, he subordinates the small tribes of Linonen, Smeldinger and Bethenzer to the sovereignty of the Abodrites under their velvet ruler Witzan.
  • Pippin , son of Charlemagne, was subjugated by the Friuli march of Istria . Since this region also belongs to the sphere of interest of Byzantium , there is gradually an alienation between the Frankish Empire and Byzantium.

Africa

  • Idris I established the independent rule of the Idrisids in Morocco , who could defend their independence from the Abbasid Caliphate.
  • Fès ("Medinat Fas") is set up by Idris I as an army camp.
  • Idris I. wins over the Banu Ifran and expands his territory.
  • In Egypt , too, there are unrest directed against the caliphate.
