Balkans
- July 20 : In the Battle of Marcellae , the Bulgarians under Kardam defeat the Byzantine Empire . After the victory, the Bulgarian Empire can consolidate itself, also through tribute payments now received from Byzantium, and the Byzantine-Bulgarian wars are over with the defeat of Byzantium. The Byzantine Emperor Constantine VI. is confronted domestically with a revolt of the Tagmata , which aims to bring the former emperor Nikephoros or the strategos Alexios Musele to the throne, but ultimately remains unsuccessful.
Franconian Empire / Emirate of Cordoba
- As part of the Saxon Wars , the Saxons rose again against the Franks , who wanted to undertake levies in Saxony for the campaigns against the Avars
- Pippin the hunchback , eldest son of Charlemagne from his first marriage, who had been excluded from the line of succession, makes an unsuccessful attempt to overthrow. The plan is betrayed by Fardulf , Pippin is tried and banished to the Prüm Monastery , his helpers are executed.

- Due to the growing dissatisfaction with the government of Æthelred I , Osred II , deposed two years ago, is brought back from his exile on the Isle of Man. However, when he tries to regain the throne of Northumbria in battle, he is abandoned by his supporters, captured and executed on September 14th . Æthelred receives support from King Offa of Mercia and marries his daughter Ælfflæd on September 29 in Catterick .

- Kutaisi becomes the residence of the Abkhaz ruler Leon.
