Güttenbach ( Croatian Pinkovac ) is a market town with 880 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in Burgenland in the Güssing district in Austria . The Croatian place name of the municipality is Pinkovac , the Slovenian name Pinkovec , Pinkovci , the Hungarian name Pinkóc .

geography

The municipality is located in southern Burgenland in the northern part of the Güssing district. Güttenbach is the only place in the municipality. Other places are Kulovits-houses and Meierhof .

history

Over 200 silver coins of the Velemer type were found in Güttenbach, which are chronologically dated to the time of the Boier incursions. From the 4th century BC BC (the early La Tène period ) the Boier migrated from their original settlement areas between the Rhine, Main and Danube to the south and southeast. The type name is given to the coins from the discovery in 1899 in nearby Velem (Hungarian Vas county ), which contained around 60 coins. On the coins of Güttenbach, an overprinting of Noric coins can still be found. Whether the treasure was dumped for cultic reasons or a hiding place in times of war can no longer be determined with certainty today.

Around 80% of the inhabitants belong to the Croatian ethnic group of Burgenland, which has populated this area for around 450 years. Güttenbach is not a Croatian new settlement, the first mentioned in 1427, then German-Hungarian place was populated by the Croats in the 16th century and later assimilated. From 1524 the place was part of the possessions of the noble Batthyány family and, like all of Burgenland, belonged to Hungary (German West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Pinkócz be used. After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ). Güttenbach has been a market town since 1986.
