The University of Music and Performing Arts Graz , also Kunstuniversität Graz ( KUG ), is an Austrian university . It goes back to the music school of the Academic Music Association founded in 1816 and is therefore the oldest music university in Austria.

history

In 1963 the Conservatory of the State of Styria was upgraded to a federal state institution - to the Academy for Music and Performing Arts in Graz . Its president (1963–1971) was Erich Marckhl . The 1970 Art Academy Organization Act transformed the Academy into the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz . In 1971, Friedrich Korcak was elected its first rector .

As early as 1982, a subscription cycle was set up in cooperation with the Society of Friends of the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz , which now includes three different subscriptions: the "main subscription", the "abo @ MUMUTH" and the "subscription for young audiences" .

Since 1983, the KUG (then still a university) has had the right to sponsorship . In 1986 a doctoral program was offered for the first time . The first graduation ceremony took place on June 21, 1991 .

The KUG received its current name in 1998, when all Austrian art colleges were renamed "Universities" with the entry into force of the Federal Act on the Organization of Universities of the Arts (KUOG '98).

In September 2009 a scientific and an artistic doctoral school were founded at the University of Art in Graz. With its Dr.artium program, the KUG was the first university in Austria (according to its own statements, the first institution in the German-speaking region) to offer an artistic doctorate . The scientific doctoral school, on the other hand, replaced the previous inter-university doctoral programs in philosophy and natural sciences. In 2013 she completed her first artistic doctorate at the KUG.

In the 2019/2020 winter semester, 1903 full students (1512 of them with main admission to the KUG and 391 in jointly established studies with main admission to the partner institution as "official co-registration") and 296 extraordinary students were registered. The proportion of women was 47%. The proportion of foreign students was 50% (based on regular students with main admission to the KUG) or just under 52% (taking into account "official co-occupancy" and extraordinary studies, in particular the offers for promoting young talent or for children and young people).

Since 1989, the KUG has organized the Franz Schubert International Chamber Music Competition and Modern Music every three years .

management

Georg Schulz's return as rector was announced for October 2018. Due to an objection by the Working Group for Equal Treatment Issues on the grounds of suspected discrimination against Rector Freismuth, who was still in office during the proceedings, on the basis of gender, age and ideology, an interim rectorate was appointed from October 1, 2018, under the direction of the Executive Vice-Rector Eike Straub.

campus

The Palais Meran has served as the main building of the Art University Graz since 1963 and is used both as an event location and by several institutes and administrative units. It was built from 1841 to 1843 by Georg Hauberisser the Elder in the style of late classicism on the grounds of a former Meierhof and was the residential palace of the Styrian Habsburg Archduke Johann.

The MUMUTH (House for Music and Musical Theater) is the winning project of an international competition that the Dutch architect Ben van Berkel won in 1998. It was opened in 2009 and is dominated by the materials steel, concrete and glass in various combinations and overlays. In addition to the large György Ligeti Hall, a concert room with an elaborate, variable acoustic concept, an orchestra rehearsal room, a rehearsal stage as well as further studios, workshops and theater infrastructure are available. The architecture of the MUMUTH was awarded the Fischer von Erlach Prize and the Urban Land Institute Award in 2010 .

Between 1988 and 1993 the "new building" was built according to plans by the Viennese architect Klaus Musil. It is also called "piano" because of its layout. Ensemble and seminar rooms are located on the upper floor, and 83 individual classrooms in the converted attic. On the ground floor are u. a. the canteen and the auditorium. The library and archive can be found in the outbuilding, which was built in 1998.

The "Theater im Palais" (TiP) is home to the Drama Institute and its rehearsal and stage rooms. The building, separated from the actual palace by the courtyard, originally served as a carriage shed and stables. In 2013/14, the building was refurbished according to the plans of the architect Johannes Wohofsky and a new glass foyer was added that reveals the old facade. The outer shell made of gold-colored, perforated aluminum sheet, placed in front of the facade, is intended to give the house a visual appearance and also serves as sun protection.

The listed "Reiterkaserne" was built in the 1840s as accommodation for cavalry soldiers and served as barracks for around 100 years. The building, which was revitalized from 2005 according to plans by the Graz architect Josef Hohensinn, encloses a courtyard and is supplemented by a new structure on Leonhardstrasse. Since 2007 it has housed classrooms and offices (especially for the Institute for Music Education ), concert halls and the workshops of the Institute for Stage Design .

The Palais Schwarzenberg , which dates from the 16th century, houses the Church Music and Organ Institute and its center for organ research on two floors . The historic arcade courtyard is one of the outstanding architectural treasures of Graz's old town . The institute rooms house rehearsal rooms, a recording studio and offices as well as a total of nine analog organs of various types, a digital e-organ and other related instruments.

Other KUG locations are at Brandhofgasse 18, Elisabethstrasse 11, Moserhofgasse 34 and 39-41, Heinrichstrasse 78, Inffeldgasse 10 and 12, Leonhardstrasse 18 and 21, Lichtenfelsgasse 21, Maiffredygasse 12b, and Merangasse 38 , Mozartgasse 3 and Petersgasse 116. There is also a branch in Oberschützen (Burgenland).
