Holger Falk (* approx. 1972) is a German opera and lied singer ( baritone ).

life and career

Holger Falk comes from a musical family. His father is a clarinetist and saxophonist. At the age of 10 he joined the Regensburger Domspatzen choir and attended the attached music high school. He went on concert tours around the world, played the piano and organ.

After graduating from high school, he studied singing at the Musikhochschule Würzburg with Sigune von Osten , later also in Milan with Franco Corelli and in New York with Neil Semer. After completing his studies, Holger Falk was a member of the Frankfurt Opera Choir for two years and then began his solo career as an opera and lied singer.

Invitations have taken him to opera houses such as the Teatro Real , the Bavarian State Opera , the Hamburg State Opera , Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and the Basel Theater . He was a guest in many concert halls and festivals, such as B. the Gewandhaus (Leipzig) , the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles , the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg , the Boston Early Music Festival or the Schwetzingen SWR Festival . In 2018 he made his US debut with Julius Drake at the Frick Collection New York City and the Phillips Collection Washington.

Holger Falk placed a focus of his artistic work on music theater and the songs of the 20th and 21st centuries.

He works with contemporary composers and has premiered works by Péter Eötvös ' ( Der goldene Drache , Paradise reloaded ), Beat Furrers ( La biancha notte ), Georges Aperghis ' ( Le soldat inconnu ), Michael Wertmüller ( Don't cry, sing! ) , Miroslav Srnkas ( Make No Noise ) and Steffen Schleiermachers ( Cocaine ). In addition, he sang numerous classical roles from Monteverdi's Orfeo ( L'Orfeo ) to Wolfgang Rihm's great operas. Holger Falk worked with renowned conductors such as B. Christopher Hogwood or Gabriel Garrido as well as directors like Calixto Bieito or Werner Schroeter . He also sings regularly with ensembles such as Ensemble Modern , Sinfonietta Basel, MusikFabrik NRW, Elyma, Concerto Köln , Elbipolis Hamburg and nuovo aspetto.

In 2016 he received the ECHO Klassik for the best song recording of the year (Satie: Mélodies et Chansons) and in 2017 the German Record Critics' Prize (Hanns Eisler: Lieder und Balladen 1929–1937). He was the first singer to record a complete recording of all 115 Mélodies for male voice by Francis Poulenc with Alessandro Zuppardo on the piano. Together with Steffen Schleiermacher at the piano, he published not only the complete Satie recordings but also recordings of Wolfgang Rihm's song cycles and the settings of Josef Matthias Hauer by Hölderlin (all published by MDG Records). In 2017/2018, a 4-CD series of Hanns Eisler's songs was released in cooperation with Deutschlandfunk Kultur and MDG .

Holger Falk currently lives in Frankfurt am Main and has two children. In the summer semester of 2019 he was appointed professor for song interpretation, oratorio and performance practice for contemporary music at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz .
