Life

Sigune von Osten studied in Hamburg and Karlsruhe. Since the beginning of her career, the focus of her artistic activity has been the interpretation of works from the 20th and 21st centuries. She worked u. a. with the composers John Cage , Olivier Messiaen , Luigi Nono , Giacinto Scelsi , Krzysztof Penderecki and sang over 100 world premieres. Her realization of John Cage's Aria, in 1973 at the Days of New Music in Hanover, marked the start of her international career. In 1976 this realization was authorized by John Cage in New York and then performed by her in Europe, the USA, South America and Japan. In 1993 and 2003 Aria made CD recordings. She had a close friendship and collaboration with the composer Giacinto Scelsi from 1979 until his death in 1988. He dedicated the compositions Olehö and Kövirügivogerü to her. Olivier Messiaen counted her among his favorite interpreters. She worked with him and his wife, the pianist Yvonne Loriod , from 1987 until his death in 1993. “It was a miracle. Your metamorphosis of my work exceeded all my expectations and added exceptionally creative moments to all previous interpretations, ”said the composer to the press after their first concert together in Bratislava. She was in connection with Luigi Nono from her appearance at the Warsaw autumn 1976 until shortly before his death. She sang his piece La fabbrica illuminata over fifty times .

Even before the fall of the Wall, Sigune von Osten campaigned for the composers of the 20th century in the communist countries. It began with the world premiere of the solo piece Black and white tears by the Czech composer Marek Kopelent (NDR 1975), dedicated to her, and continued with the GDR composer Paul-Heinz Dittrich , GDR. In the late 80s and 90s, she experienced some musical historical moments as a singer: in 1987 the GDR premiere in East Berlin of Paul-Heinz Dittrichs Engführung (Dresden Philharmonic, conductor Herbert Kegel ), in 1989 the last live broadcast on Radio DDR from the Schauspielhaus and the concert on the day of reunification in the Komische Oper Berlin (premiere of Sarmatian songs by Siegfried Matthus), in 1993 the first performance of Arnold Schönberg's Pierrot lunaire (Festival Soundways, St. Petersburg) and in 1988 the first performance of Schönberg's Expectation (St. Petersburg Philharmonic / Alexander Dmitriev).

From 1991 to 2001 Sigune von Osten was professor for singing at the Musikhochschule Würzburg and today gives workshops and lessons in interpretation, contemporary vocal technique and improvisation.

Since 1995 she has campaigned for the mediation of new music outside of the insider festivals and for the music of non-European cultures. In 1995 she launched the Musica Temporale Festival and the Musica Temporale Ensemble (1995–2005) in her native Dresden. In 1996 she developed the ATLANTIC FESTIVAL Rhineland-Palatinate (1996, 1998, 2000) and founded the ART POINT Trombacher Hof cultural initiative. Since 1996 she has been designing the annual PARKMUSIK Neue Ho (e) rizonte festival on and around the Trombacher Hof, where she also lives. Since 2000, she has also been developing her own interdisciplinary audiovisual projects, in which professionals and amateurs often get involved, such as the industry-critical music event MenschMaschine-KlangMaschine or her projects in the German pavilion at the EXPO Shanghai 2010 .

In 2011 she was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate by the then Prime Minister Kurt Beck .
