Olaf Polziehn (* 1970 in Ludwigsburg ) is a German musician ( piano , composition ) of modern jazz who teaches as a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz .

Career

Polziehn began studying music at the Cologne University of Music in 1992 with Frank Chastenier and John Taylor . He was also the pianist of the Federal Jazz Orchestra from 1992 to 1995 . In 1992 he founded his own trio with Ingmar Heller (bass) and initially Oliver Mewes (drums). Since 2002 the trio has been expanded to a quartet with saxophonists like Harry Allen and Jesse Davis . In 1998 Thomas Cremer and bassist Günter Lenz (now replaced by Martin Gjakonovski ) brought him to his Frankfurt Jazz Trio , which has since produced four records.

Polziehn played a. a. with Bob Mintzer , Patti Austin , Till Brönner , Ack van Rooyen , Bert Joris , Scott Hamilton , Rolf Kühn or Klaus Graf . For the Frankfurter Rundschau it is "one of the most interesting pianistic discoveries in recent years."

Polziehn has been Professor of Jazz Piano at the Graz University of Music and Performing Arts since 2009 . In 1993 he was the winner of the Tonger Competition in the jazz piano category.
