The Sigmund Freud University of Vienna (SFU) was founded in 2005 and is the largest private university in Austria.
history
The intention to found the SFU was announced in December 2003. They want to offer a practice-related and academic degree in psychotherapy science . Psychotherapy has long been an important part of the health care system, but so far there has been no proper study for this discipline. In 2005 the SFU was accredited as a private university by the Austrian Accreditation Council.
After five years of planning, the construction of the new main building of the SFU (a study building of the Vienna University of Economics and Business ) began in 2013 and moved into in February 2015 at Freudplatz 1 in the Leopoldstadt district . Before that, it was in a former financial building on Schnirchgasse in the Landstrasse district .
In 2016, the SFU was the first private university at which a law degree was accredited (Bachelor of Law ). In the same year, the master’s degree in law was also accredited and construction of a new faculty building opposite the main SFU building began. The new building at Freudplatz 3 for the Faculty of Medicine and Law was opened in March 2019.
Started as a pure human sciences university, today there are faculties for psychotherapy science , psychology , medicine and law . The SFU also has locations in Linz , Berlin , Ljubljana , Milan and Paris .
Course offer
In addition to bachelor , master and doctoral degrees in psychotherapy science, the range of courses also includes a bachelor's, master's and PhD in psychology . Both types of study are also offered in English.
In addition, the SFU Vienna offers the bachelor's and master's degree in human medicine , dentistry and law . A bachelor's and master's degree in sports science is in the process of being accredited.
In addition, university courses and advanced training courses can be completed.
Faculties
Psychotherapy science

The Faculty of Psychotherapy Science plays a pioneering role in the development process of research in psychotherapy science and currently houses ten research institutes. Since 2007, the SFU has been offering a doctoral program in psychotherapy science in addition to the Bachelor and Magisterium courses.
In the SFU eight schools of psychotherapy (are psychoanalysis , individual psychology , Systemic Therapy , Integrative Gestalt therapy and in cooperation with other training organizations Person-centered psychotherapy , behavioral therapy , existential analysis , transaction analysis ) to choose from.
The Faculty of Psychotherapy Science operates five psychotherapeutic outpatient clinics in Vienna and others in Berlin, Paris and Ljubljana.
psychology

The Faculty of Psychology offers a bachelor's and master's degree as well as a PhD program in psychology. In the 2019/20 winter semester, the bachelor's and master's degree in psychology also started in English. As a postgraduate university course, it is the only institution in Austria to offer training modules in the area of " online counseling " in order to do justice to the particularities of computer-aided counseling. Due to the Corona crisis, this type of advice has become enormously important.
The Faculty of Psychology operates outpatient clinics in Vienna and Milan. The Faculty of Psychology is also a scientific partner of the commercial service provider Instahelp, which has been offering online psychological counseling in real time for the first time in Europe since 2015.
medicine

The Faculty of Medicine offers studies in human medicine and dentistry in bachelor's and master's degrees; graduates are doctor of general medicine (Dr. med. Univ.) Or doctor of dentistry (Dr. med. Dent.).
In the Bachelor's program, students learn the basics of medical knowledge with a close interweaving of pre-clinical and clinical subjects. It is the common basis for human and dental medicine. The course is characterized by early patient contact, imparting extensive diagnostic knowledge and learning how to conduct medical interviews. The separate master’s courses in human medicine or dentistry are characterized by the deepening of medical knowledge through to therapy, by research v. a. as part of the master's thesis and a clinical practical year in hospitals or in the dental clinic of the SFU (dental clinic).

A law degree in Vienna based on the Bologna model with a Bachelor (LL.B., 6 semester) and Master (LL.M., 4th semester).
The course is offered as a full-time face-to-face course.
