The Danube Private University is an Austrian private university based in Krems an der Donau (Austria).

The educational institution was on 13 August 2009 by the Austrian Accreditation Council for five years as a private university accredited . The legal basis is the University Accreditation Act (UniAkkG). The Austrian Quality Assurance Agency (AQ Austria) was already responsible for the reaccreditation procedure in 2014, and it also deals with quality assurance procedures at state universities.

The institutional reaccreditation was carried out in 2014 by the Agency for Quality Assurance and Accreditation Austria (AQ Austria) and extended until 2020. In September 2014, AQ Austria confirmed the extension of the accreditation of the Danube Private University until 2020 and the equality of students at private universities with lecturers and students at state universities.

In its letter of September 8, 2015, the Federal Ministry for Science, Research and Economy confirmed the status, recognition and conformity with EU directives.

The range of courses includes the degree course in dentistry, the bachelor's degree in dental hygiene (BA), medical journalism and public relations (BA / MA) as well as various postgraduate and part-time Master of Science courses in dentistry (orthodontics, oral surgery / implantology, endodontics, aesthetic-reconstructive dentistry, Periodontics and implantology).

In 2017 the doctoral program in dentistry was accredited as a PhD, in 2018 that of the degree in human medicine.

Number of students and graduates

At the beginning of the 2018 summer semester, 620 students were qualified for the Dr. med. dent. enrolled. These are trained in 12 semesters, with a study group starting each summer and winter semester.

In September 2015, the first study group in dentistry was awarded a Dr. med. dent. graduated. In the meantime, a total of 298 graduates have received the academic degree Dr. med. dent. awarded.

In addition, as of April 2018, around 1,100 licensed dentists are studying at the DPU in one of the postgraduate Master of Science courses in German and English, which come from 46 countries around the world.

campus

In 2012, a dental clinic with 48 treatment places was opened on the same site.

On the former site of the Förthof train station, Förthofstrasse 4, a new building planned by the Luxembourg architect Francois Valentiny was opened in 2017, which houses lecture halls, internship rooms, an auditorium and research facilities.

organization structure

The top is formed by the president Marga B. Wagner-Pischel, the rector Dieter Müßig and the dean Ralf Gutwald.

research

The main research areas are "Digital Technologies in Dentistry and CAD / CAM" under the direction of Constantin von See and "Natural and Cultural History of Man" under the direction of the dental anthropologist Kurt W. Alt . Research collaborations exist with international institutions, e.g. B. the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT), the CEST competence center, the IPNA of the University of Basel, the Heart Center of the University of Cologne, the Nippon Dental University in Tokyo and others. In addition, Danube Private University is a member of the International Union of Schools of Oral Health (IUSOH).

A cooperation agreement was also concluded with the Russian University of Friendship of Nations .

Initial hurdles

Students are allegedly mostly children of dentists who pay 26,000 euros in tuition fees per year and total study costs of 156,000 euros in six academic years. In 2015, these were the highest tuition fees of all Austrian universities. In 2018, these were already exceeded by another Austrian private university. The Danube Private University is a wholly-owned private university that sustains itself without any state subsidies.

The dental association declined to study at the university for quality reasons. One of the main concerns of the medical officials was that as many dentists would be trained as in all of Austria. There is now a good understanding.

Possible inconsistencies in the accreditation were the subject of a parliamentary inquiry in May 2010, but the Federal Ministry of Science and Research rejected criticism of the Accreditation Council. In the 2014 reaccreditation procedure of the Danube Private University (DPU), the experts appointed by the Agency for Quality Assurance and Accreditation Austria for the procedure for the extension of the accreditation rather confirm: “In summary, it can be stated that the structure of the teaching, the didactic design of the curriculum, the modules the advanced training, but also the examination regulations, the workload and the duration of the study meet or even exceed international standards. The required learning objectives and qualifications can be achieved and the intended academic degree is internationally comparable. "

The claim that the state of Lower Austria provides necessary internships at hospitals for training had to be withdrawn by the DPU. At the beginning of 2011, the state parliament decided that the state was not obliged to do so. The state government was commissioned to have the DPU accreditation checked, which was confirmed by the BMWFW in September 2015
