Markus Schirmer (born June 10, 1963 in Graz ) is an internationally successful Austrian pianist and professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz .

Life

Markus Schirmer attended the Academic Gymnasium Graz as a student . His German teacher was the writer , poet and philosopher Alfred Kolleritsch . Schirmer passed his school leaving examination in 1981. He then studied piano a. a. with Rudolf Kehrer , Karl-Heinz Kämmerling , Paul Badura-Skoda and Doris Wolf.

Schirmer works with major orchestras and conductors, such as B. He is particularly enthusiastic about Schubert , but also about rarities such as Britten's ironic piano concerto, the transcendent works of Szymanowski or the Apostle's “Kubiniana”. Chamber music plays a major role in his work. He plays with Julian Rachlin, Renaud Capuçon , Clemens Hagen, Christian Altenburger , Danjulo Ishizaka , Patrick Demenga, the Artis Quartet , the Auryn Quartet , the Chilingirian quartet, the Gaede Trio and others. v. a.

Markus Schirmer wrote numerous songs over the years, including for the Portuguese-Australian singer Sandra Pires, who lives in Vienna . He is also dedicated to artistic projects such as “Scurdia”, a crossover partnership initiated by Schirmer in 1998 with the Kurdish lute player Risgar Koshnaw and other international artists.

Schirmer is a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz , where he has been leading a piano concert class since 2000 and is also a juror at various international piano competitions. He is also involved in “Live Music Now”, a project that was launched by Yehudi Menuhin to promote musical talent.

Awards

For his unusual artistic versatility, Markus Schirmer received the "Music Manual Award" at the international music fair EUROMUSIC. In 2004 he received one of the most prestigious awards for an Austrian artist in the form of the “ Karl Böhm Interpretation Prize ”. For his first CD with Schubert sonatas, he received the “German Record Critics' Award”. Other awards for his recordings include the “Supersonic award” Luxembourg ( Pizzicato ) or the Ö1-Pasticciopreis.

In 2014 he was awarded the Great Josef Krainer Prize .

Projects

  • Angel in the head

Together with the Graz actor Wolfram Berger, Schirmer designed the cabaret program “Angels in the Head”, a collage of shaking rhymes, pop songs, folk songs and nursery rhymes.

  • Scurdia

"Scurdia" is an improvisation project that unites extraordinary musicians from all parts of the world on one stage and is able to release new artistic and creative energies by bridging the gap between the most diverse cultures. Among others, the internationally renowned guitarist and native Venezuelan Arnoldo Moreno, Ismael Barrios, who worked as a percussionist for Opus , EAV , STS , the German flautist Reinhard Grube and keyboardist Franz Kreimer from the Ausseer Hardbradlers will be there .
