The Victoria Hall is a concert hall in Geneva ( Switzerland ) for playing classical music . It is located near the Grand Théâtre and the Conservatory . The Victoria Hall is used by the Orchester de la Suisse Romande .

history

Daniel Fitzgerald Packenham Barton (1850–1907), British consul in Geneva and wealthy music lover, founded Harmonie nautique in 1883 and then had a concert hall built for it by the architect John Camoletti. He dedicated it to his regent, Queen Victoria .

The building, built between 1891 and 1894, has a facade in the characteristic style of Beaux Arts architecture . In 1904 Barton donated the house to the city of Geneva. It burned on September 16, 1984, partially destroying the interior and the organ completely. The city then decided to restore the building. On April 4, 1986, it was added to the cantonal list of cultural assets in Geneva / Cité and then to the list of cultural assets of national importance in the canton of Geneva . The Dutch company J. L. van den Heuvel Orgelbouw was entrusted with the construction of the new organ . The opening concert took place on February 13, 1993.

The concert hall has 1,600 seats. In 2006 the city renovated it to improve the comfort for listeners and musicians.

The first organ was built in 1894 by the organ builder Th. Kuhn. The instrument was replaced by a large neoclassical instrument in 1949, which was destroyed in the fire in Victoria Hall in 1984. Today's organ was built by the organ builder J. L. van den Heuvel Orgelbouw . The large symphonic instrument according to French tradition in the style of Aristide Cavaillé-Coll has 71 registers distributed over four manual works and pedal. The game actions are mechanical, supported by Barker levers .
