The Man in Me (German: The man in me ) is a song by Bob Dylan from the 1970 album New Morning . Although the album itself was very well received, the song only became popular with the 1998 film The Big Lebowski by the Coen Brothers .
background
The pace of the studio version recorded for the album in New York City differs significantly from the speed of the first attempts Dylan played at the typing. In order to better work out the strengths of the studio musicians who support him, he slowed down the pace considerably, which is a special characteristic of the rhythm. The first bars are also very catchy, the lyrics being limited to a simple “La-La-La” melody and accompanied by a gospel choir .
The song was used in the opening scene and - later - in a dream scene caused by a hit on the head in the comedy film The Big Lebowski . Jeff Bridges , the actor of the protagonist ("The Dude"), stated in a 2016 interview with Rolling Stone Magazine that The Man in Me was his favorite Bob Dylan song. Together with his country band, he often played the song in live performances, including on the show by Jimmy Kimmel . It can also be found on the soundtrack of the Simpsons episode City of No Mercy from season 28 and the episode The Veranda Test from season four of How I Met Your Mother .
Cover versions
The Man in Me has been covered by some well-known musicians and bands. These include Lonnie Mack , Joe Cocker , The Clash , Say Anything , Al Kooper , The Persuasions , Jan Erik Vold , Nick Kamen , My Morning Jacket , Bobby Vee and Buffalo Tom . The Austrian singer-songwriter Wolfgang Ambros also sang a German-language version with modified text with “Da Mensch in mir”.
